Welcome!
Welcome Grade 9's to our Social 9 blog! We will be
using the blog to work on different assignments throughout the term - including
letter writing, current events, essays, notes, and others!
Your first assignment is as follows: Write a letter to our Canadian Prime Minister. You should discover his name and the appropriate way of addressing him (a google search would be helpful with this). Your letter must address a concern that you have with the federal government and policies that they have and/or choices they have made. Your letter should be a business letter. Click here if you need help with what that should look like.
In your letter please include:
- an introduction - where you introduce yourself, your issue, and what your opinion is regarding this issue.
- a body paragraph - where you explain your concerns with the government and why you are dissatisfied.
- a 2nd body paragraph - where you offer suggestions on what could be done differently and how
- a conclusion - where you sum up your letter
Remember - a paragraph should have a minimum of 3 sentences - so this letter must be a minimum of 4 paragraphs and 12 sentences . . . not too daunting for Grade 9.
You will be graded on this letter in a formative fashion -
EX - excellent
PR - proficient
AD - adequate
NI - needs improvement
IC - incomplete
You will post your letter as a 'comment' to this post.
REMEMBER - Save a copy of your letter in a word document in case it doesn't post well or gets lost in cyber space.
You should take about 20 minutes for this assignment.
---------------------------
When you finish your letter . . . analyze this political cartoon . . . the information on this website http://www.mackaycartoons.net/2013/huh2013-01-16.html (purple column on the right) will help if you're not sure what all of this means. Use the questions we used in class to help you analyze this cartoon. Create a word document with the answers. Save the document (carefully labelled - Political Cartoon Feb 7 2013) in your files. Dear, Stephen Harper;
Id like to thank you for your time in reading this letter. It is greatly appreciated. My name is Hunter Lorenson. I am 15 years old from Edmonton Alberta. Iam writing this in regards of Canada system/service speed is very slow.
I believe that that the speed of the mail is slow. It took my letter 3 weeks to get to my grandmother in Halifax. I was flabbergasted at how slow it was. I didn’t know it would be that slow and the letter ended up missing her birthday.
I think that the mailing process should be a lot faster. You could get every letter that needed to go to one place from a province and fly it to the province it needs to go. The delivery wait should be longest 2 weeks. Please take the time to read this.
Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Hunter Lorenson

Dear,The Right Honorable Stephen Harper ;
I’d like to thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my letter to you and opinions that come with it. It’s greatly appreciated. My name is David Quenneville, I’m 15 years old and I’m writing to you because I believe that the Canada Post system/service speed is atrocious.
I believe that the speed of the mailing of the different items from Canada Post is extremely slow. It took my letter 6 ½ weeks to reach my grandmother that I sent for her birthday. Other Companies on average take half as long. Another problem is the workers. Their attitude when working is embarrassing. They look very much disinterested. Which is terrible customer service?
I believe that doing things such as increasing the pay wages will leave the workers in a better mood which will help benefit their effort towards the company. This may help the customer service. Another possibility is that having the drivers of the delivery trucks travel a certain amount of hours or make a certain amount of deliveries will increase the speed of the incoming deliveries. All of these may help the problems.
Thanks again for taking the time for reading my thoughts and opinions with the letter.
Sincerely, David

Dear The Right Honorable Stephen Joseph Harper :
My name is Mackenzie Gates, and I am writing to you about an issue I have about the Safe Streets and Communities Act. I believe this policy is inefficient and not needed. Below will be some reasons why this act is both of these things.
This act increases jail time for people with drug offenses, which with your own party’s studies; show that harsher sentences have no deterrent effect on crime. This makes judges unable to put house arrest for certain offenders, which allows immigration officers to deny work permits to foreigners who may be sexually exploited. Not only the above information, but this act causes our prisons to grow at a substantial rate. With the online communications monitoring, I was one of the 70 000 signatures that had that measure removed. I agree 100% with Quebec when they refused to pay for the bill.
For you want my opinion, which is the opinion of many other Canadians, revoke it, take it out of affect. If not, take away the increased jail time, and replace it with house arrest, prohibition, and then jail time for second offences. I suggest only extended jail time if the offender had a substantial amount of illegal narcotics, or selling them.
I hope you take these into consideration when you plan to revise the Safe Streets and Communities Act. If you would like to contact me, you may send me a letter or email me, if it’s me convenient for yourself, at totallynotfake@hotmail.com. Again, thank you for your time in reading this letter.
Sincerely,
Mackenzie Gates

Dear The Right Honorable Stephen Joseph Harper
I, Austin Couturier, am very un-pleased with your policy to cut environment programs. How could you reduce fifty nine percent of their funding, it was used for very well and now you’re just going to use it on something else. What could possibly be more important than the environment? Without the environment all life on earth will cease to exist. Please don’t replace it with something else.
You need to think about the children. If we destroy the environment then their life will be a living hell. We are thankful of having the wonderful life in Canada with fresh air, the vast landscape, and the variety of species. If we don’t think about our environment that will all change. If I could guess I would think around 5% of Canada’s specie variation would be gone in the next fifty years. Just think about that, could you imagine not waking up in the morning with beautiful, graceful, majestic birds waking you up in the morning.
We don’t need technology to have a sustainable life. We need the environment. Do you really think technology will keep the human race alive for years on end? It won’t last maybe, just for a few more thousand years or so. If we had a great environment than it wouldn’t madder, but we don’t. Have you seen how many species have already been extinct, I get that some animals went extinct because of over hunting, but have you seen what technology has done to the specie variation of the world. It’s done damage.
The environment can also help Canada economically. If we still have the beautiful landscape more people would love to visit us. Who would want to come to a place with no trees, no animals, and air that would make you cough for just being outside? I wouldn’t and I think most of Canada would agree. You can be greedy this time and no one would complain.
Mr. Harper please take this into consideration, the environment programs help a lot they help the climate change, fresh air, animals of all sorts and even more. Don’t cut it. We need our environment if we want life on Canada to live for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Austin Couturier

Dear Mr. Stephen Harper,
My name is Katherine yang and I am in grade 9 social studies and I am very concerned about the Canadian environmental. This issue just doesn’t affect what is doing to happen today but this would also affect us in your future. I believe that we should pay more attention to this because this is something that is increasing rapidly.
I am a very concerned citizen worrying about the Canadian environmental about global warming and you believing that this is a global plot. I strongly believe that this is not a social plot for this is happening and this should not be taken lightly. According to the weather charts for the past few years the weather has increased about 1.9% since 2008. The rise of this increasing temperature has caused more atmospheric carbon dioxide to increase which has increased dramatically. Global warning has not just increased dramatically but changed the physical, ecological and social changes caused by decades of unsustainable use of the earth’s resources.
There are many ways to stop global warming. There are many ways that are something we can do in our daily lives to occur this from happening. For example we can car pool, instead of driving to the same place in different cars, which would decrease carbon emissions. We can also take showers instead of baths because that would be energy savings and avoid power showers.
We shouldn’t just stand here and not do something. We need to do something so that global warming will not affect us in the future and influence our lives. Just doing something every day would make a big change in global warning.
Sincerely,
Katherine Yang

Dear the Right Honorable Stephen Harper,
My name is Ryan, I am a 14 year old from Edmonton and I have experienced at an airport when I was on my way to my fabulous vacation, but I have experienced an unfair rules/laws in place at airport security. I feel that some of these are unnecessary or too much.
I understand that these are in place to keep us safe, but I don’t see how putting a bottle of hand sanitizer in a bag suddenly makes it safe to bring on the plane, because once the passenger is onboard, they can realistically take it back out and use it for whatever it is they use it for, so basically if it was to be something dangerous and it wasn’t detected than that’s failing to do what’s needed. Also if the bottle above a certain size it’s taken away from you and thrown away.
I believe an easy way to sidestep the taking away of the bottles is to just put them in a labeled bag, and have it carried in the luggage area of the plane, that way the passenger is able to bring their drinks or personal hygiene bottles on their vacation with them if something happens and they forget to pack it or its leftover in their bag from an earlier trip and simply just been forgotten about.
I believe this could make many passengers happy at customs, I know it because I lost my favorite limited edition shampoo because I forgot to remove it from my bag. Thank you for your time and reading this letter, if you need or would like to contact me please call 123 987 3456 or you can email me at Lettermaker@gmail.com.

What Current issue is being addressed in this cartoon?
Opra Winfree is having an interview with Lance Armstrong to confess about using steroids in all of his races.
What is the cartoonist trying to say about this issue through this cartoon? Why?
Cartoonist is trying to say that Lance Armstrongs reputation and Opra Winfree rating are in a very large hole and both are trying to find a way out. This interview may help them get out.
What do you think about the cartoonist’s message? Why?
I think it’s a good message about the two of them. It makes a lot of sense. Its saying the both of them are being criticized for this interview.
What is your opinion about the issue being addressed? Why?
I think that Lance Armstrong did do the steroids but not a lot. He shouldn’t be banned from racing. Opra is a good person and I liked the interview

Dear The Right Hon. Stephan Joseph Harper P.C.M.P,
Hello, I am Christian Chorney and I am a grade nine student at Vimy Ridge Academy. I am writing to you about the loss of the great penny. I feel that if we didn’t get rid of the penny everything would stay the same and nothing would change and it would cause less confusion.
I think that the penny symbolized so much more than just 1 cent, it’s part of Canada’s history. Without the penny it would be so much harder to get the exact change or almost impossible. I am just not very happy because the penny has been here for my whole life and now it is just leaving.
I think there are only a few way to fix the problem. One of the only solutions is if the royal mint started producing the penny again. Another thing they could do is install a law that you could round up to the nearest five cent.
Thank you for reading my letter and listening to my complaints. You can email me at cccc8@hmail.com and can write back at the address above. Thanks again for listening.

Dear the right honorable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P.
I am writing this letter on behalf of myself; I firmly believe that there should and could be many more RCMP officers in Canada. I believe in this because there are too many laws broken out side of the city.
If we had more RCMP officers, we could crack down law abuse and we could show the rest of the world that we can be respectful. If we could just show people that if you’re out in the country, you can’t break the law. If we could just train more men and women to protect our cities and overall country we would be a better off.
Canada is at the point where it is a major country and should be leading by example. If we could crack down on the law and had officers everywhere and would patrol and have the right safety equipment and protect themselves as well as others we would also be better off.
Overall, what I’m trying to get at is that we need to have more RCMP officers just roaming around and protecting our cities from danger. Please take my letter into consideration. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely

Dear The right honorable Stephen Harper prime minister of Canada,
My name is Braeden Nesbitt, and I would like to inform you about an issue we have been having about the recent murders of the two women in Ottawa. I find it very important to not only lock away the man who did the offence but any others who have committed murder as well. It is also of extreme importance to make sure it doesn’t happen again anywhere in Canada.
The murders that have happened recently are very tragic and I believe something must be done so it doesn’t happen again. As the Prime Minister you should start by tightening up our law enforcements to not only keep the offenders locked away but work harder to get current offenders in prison. In doing this I believe you can and will make Canada a safer and happier environment for residents and tourists coming for a visit.
For improvement of our wonderful country I believe activating, hiring or using more officers and detectives for all cases will rapidly improve law enforcement, and increase the speed of which the offender is put into prison as well as providing more jobs for citizens. Law enforcement would also be improved if the equipment officers are able to use is more advanced and a larger quantity for all officers use, allowing for an easier job for the officers.
I hope I have provided enough reason for you to help our country from crimes and put my advice and ideas into action as soon as possible. It would make me elated to hear back from you on your opinion on what you have to say about my preposition. You can contact me by email at Boiler13@live.com thank you for your time

Dear the Right Honorable Sir Stephen Harper:
I am proposing this letter to you on behalf of myself; I am a concerned Canadian citizen of Edmonton Alberta and I would like you to consider my thoughts.
In our country of Canada today, we have many issues of murder and this is an issue that needs to be taking care of. Recent events in Ottawa contain the murder of two women, we need to fight murder with justice and bring these terrible people to court and prove them guilty. In my opinion we need a stronger justice system not just in Ottawa but throughout Canada; there are many murders that need to be solved but we won’t get there with few police. We need to hire more policemen and forensic scientists in our cities to bring these murders to a halt.
People all around the world are notified of the news in our country, and I strongly believe that we are gaining a reputation, especially Edmonton. Many know my home city, the capital of Alberta as “Deadmonton” and this needs to change; but this is up to you and our municipal government. My suggestions would be to spend more money on our city protection units such as the RCMP’s and our everyday policemen.
Police, RCMP’s and other protection systems should, and I hope will be used in our country. Most people will be glad to hear that we are being protected better than ever, so no one is scared to leave their homes or walk home from school and work. The cities we live in need to be protected and I hope you will consider my thoughts on this, Thank you.
Sincerely,
Cameron Ness

Dear: The Right honorable Sir Stephen Harper
My name is Justin Wishard and I live in Edmonton Alberta. I currently attend Vimy Ridge Academy in grade 9. I am writing to you about the financial cost of the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. The total cost of it was 1.84 billion dollars. I would strongly suggest that you take my ideas into account.
I strongly believe that the 1.84 billion dollars was not a necessary need for the Canadian government at this time. Although Canada got a good reputation from it. There are more important things right now. For example cleaning up the national parks would be a good cause.
I also believe safety was not a high standard because one of the athletes died in the qualifying round. It should have more of a priority. If they are going to spend 1.84 billion dollars they should have spent at least a small portion on safety. I do believe they should spend money on the Olympics but a reasonable amount because it happens every 4 years and will not go to Vancouver again for a very long time.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I hope you take my ideas into account. If you need to contact me you can email me at jwishard1298@gmail.com or call me at 780-661-6422. Dear Prime Minister Harper:
My name is Liam Bevan; I am a grade 9 student in Edmonton, Alberta. I have a concern about the lack of funds put towards the Canadian athletes, especially our summer athletes such as our National Soccer team; I know part of it is that our winters are so long; summers short however I think we need at way better training facility with all the things we need to be competitive in the Olympics. Our Women’s soccer team was so close to glory at the last Summer Games in my opinion I think they need that last little bit of training to push them over the edge to gold!
This facility could change the way other countries look at us when it comes to sport competition, letting them know we mean business especially to power houses in the Summer Olympics like the USA, Mexico, Spain and Brazil. I know it would be really expensive but I know the athlete would appreciate it and show their appreciation by bringing home those Gold Medals. Believing in the athletes is a big part as well which I know you do, it would really mean a lot to us Canadians because we are a competitive country wear chances are we find ourselves in and around the top of the podium.

Dear: The Right Honorable Prime Minister Sir Stephen Harper
The national parks of Canada are one of my favorite features in this country. I have noticed a great increase in litter and air pollution around the areas. This displeases me; I suggest (considering the lack of it) more waste bins surrounding the parks.
I realize there are some around the parks but I find there are obviously not enough of them considering the litter and air pollution in the parks. Just have a garbage truck come around every three to four days to empty the trash cans and that should hopefully reduce amount of litter in the area.
For the air pollution increase, I am convinced that the increase in air pollution is caused from mostly smoking and car pollutions. Now you can’t really do anything with the cars besides promote more eco-friendly vehicles. But with smoking you can create areas key to not harming the environment. With waste disposals specifically for cigarettes.
This is for reducing the amount of smoking in endangered areas. The areas must be looked after every day to make sure nothing goes wrong with the environment. Hopefully you think my ideas are efficient and productive to preserve the nation parks. Thank-you The Right Honorable Prime Minister Sir Stephen Harper.

Dear The Right Honorable Sir Stephan Harper:
My name is Jacob Marouelli and I live in Edmonton, Alberta and part of a grade 9 class at Vimy Ridge Academy. I am writing to you about the financial cost of the F-35 Lighting II fighter jets that you bought recently for the Canadian military. There are pros and cons of the expenses being addressed in this topic. I will be expressing my opinions and thoughts about this issue.
I strongly believe that the new fighter jets were not a necessary objective for the Canadian Military. The reason why I think about this for the new cost of the jets is because that the fighter jets that Canada has now considerably fine for what Canadian military needs. Comparisons show that between the F-35 Lighting II and the CF-18 Hornets are reasonably close in their statistics between the two planes. The F-35’s are highly expensive. For 65 jets, the cost is around 9 billion dollars. While the CF-18’s are 4 billion for 138 units, plus 2.6 billion to upgrade the jets. Also the jets would take many years to build them.
If the purchase was not made the money could be spent on many other important objectives for Canada such as new companies or sporting facilities. The money could have been saved and keep the country out of debt and pay for the money spent at the Olympics in Vancouver. Even though that the purchase of the jets were unnecessary, they do bring advances to the Canadian Military.
In conclusion, I don’t believe they should have been purchase, because the jets that our country as fine enough jets for our military. The money could have been spent on other objectives for Canada and it will have a big financial problem for Canada in the future of our country. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely, Jacob Marouelli

Dear The Right Honorable Sir Stephen Joseph Harper;
I am a grade nine student that attends Vimy Ridge Academy in Ms. Mahood’s social studies class. I just wanted to take a small amount out of your day if you could read my letter. I am a big supporter of lots of things you have done with the country of Canada. There is just a concern I am having with the decision to get rid of all the pennies in Canada.
The pennies are the big money makers for charities and by getting rid of them it will be a major loss for charities. Lots of the charities are going to be even more upset when they are all gone. They will take a long time to get out of the Canadian money system because lots of people in Canada have pennies around their house where they don’t even know where they are. That might cause issues for Canadians when they find their pennies and they are no longer valid for money. They will have to get rid of them probably by throwing them out.
One of the big issues they have is now narrowing down all the prices that are 99cents beside the amount of money. That will cause issues for stores, they will have to change lots of their prices in their store. By getting rid of pennies it will cause all these issues I have stated. With that big concern being the loss to charities and the decrease in amount of donations they receive.
I would just like to thank you for a final time. For taking some time out of you day for reading my letter. I would appreciate if you would maybe consider some of the things I have said. If you need to contact me my information is on the top and my phone number is 780-997-779,thanks for your time.

Dear right honorable Stephen Harper,
My name is Bryn Lipinski, and I believe that there should be a line drawn, and a law set in order to stop rioting in the country and cities of Canada.
I am writing this letter as just a simple citizen, but as someone with a vision; someone who believes there is something to them. The Vancouver Olympics in 2010 had an extreme impact on the moral of Vancouver’s government. Cars were flipped over, and buildings were set on fire. The people who had nothing to do with this matter paid the ultimate price. In the morning of the Olympics, the city of Vancouver was hit hard with a figurative whiplash of riot. The citizens of Vancouver noticed how riot can destroy a city in just one night.
Some suggestions for stopping the rioting would/could be creating a fine of more than $250 if property or possessions were damaged. (Knowing rioters, they will not pay up easily.) If rioting goes on after rioters are told to stop by the police via government, the police will be forced to take immediate action and forcefully stop the rioters. If one single gunshot was fired by the rioters, the police would open fire. If these actions are chronic, then exile will be the only choice for the government of Canada to take.
If these actions and laws are taken into account, and set as laws of Canada, the rioting will if not stop, be reduced. I thank you for reading my letter. I believe that this country has a big hole to fill; when you put these laws into effect the hole will be filled with brand new laws.

Dear the right honorable Sir Stephen Harper;
I am a grade 9 student at Vimy Ridge Academy. Also, I am a concerned citizen regarding Edmonton having the highest murder rate in Canada, and what is being done to solve our fatal problem. Generally this is a local police investigation, but the rate is too high and a federal investigation should be debated.
With Edmonton having the highest, citizens don’t have the freedom of feeling safe in the city they live in and ultimately, it doesn’t reflect Canada in a way where more people want to move/immigrate here to Canada. The local police department isn’t doing enough to a point where they need federal backup so help stop the murders around Edmonton, so the population of Edmonton can feel more safe and more enthusiastic about the city we take pride in living in
.
As well as federal support, the people of Edmonton must be held accountable for keeping a close eye, reporting anything suspicious, and being safe as to what they are doing. Also, something that can be done is a law regarding gambling. Many of murders that occur are based on gambling debts that don’t get paid off. If there is a spending limits in the casinos and poker matches, can help reduce murder rates in that specific section.
I truly know you are doing everything you can to help our people feel, and be more safe in the City of Edmonton, I’d like to thank you for all that you’ve done, including outside of the murder department, and you always to everything you can.

Hi, my name is Mackenzie Laiss and I am from Vimy Ridge Academy and I have a concern about the new federal and Newfoundland and Labrador southern section high way transportation. I really thing that is shouldn’t be done there but in a less diversity place for the road to go.
The reason for this is because of the wild lives that are there right now like bears, fish, and rare birds there. All the trees that you are cutting down for the projected that could really affect our environment that my community loves so much for hiking and the high way is going to be right on the closest hiking path there is to us. We all have signed a petition to stop this outrage high that could be built somewhere else.
There are other suggestion for this high way that could be redirected around the beautiful wild life and nature. I would hate to see the great environment that we have here today. Or you The Right Honorable Stephen Harper Prime Minister can build a wild life park for this area.
Thank you for your valuable time for read thin letter and I do hope you would change your mind about this high way. The Right Honorable Stephen Harper Prime Minister if you need any info from me then please contacts me at my email mmtglaiss@gmail.comand thank you.
Sincerely
Mackenzie Laiss
ReplyDelete1) I see lance Armstrong and Oprah sitting in two holes in the ground on wooden chairs, There is two shovels above the ground in piles of dirt and I see grass. Oprah is saying “I am here with Lance Armstrong to get to the bottom of things” below Lance is the word “reputation” and below Oprah is the word “ratings”
2) The comic is about Oprah interviewing Lance because her ratings are down in a hole and she needs to get out as vice versa with why Lance wants to do the interview, to get his reputation up out of the hole.
3) The cartoonist is trying to say that both of the celebrities did the interview for personal gain Oprah for her ratings and Lance for his reputation.
4) I believe that the message the cartoonist is trying to say is very well written and true.
5) My opinion is that lance had ruined his reputation and the artist showed that very well the artist also showed how Oprahs views were down and explained that very well also. I believe that this cartoon is very well written.

The Right Honourable Stephen Harper,
I am a grade 9 student from Edmonton, Alberta and I am writing this letter to you concerning the much talked about issue of pollutants being released from the production of electricity. I have two major concerns on this topic, here are my thoughts. We live in a modern society with innovation everywhere, including amazing breakthroughs on how we can produce more energy with less or no environmental impact! So why do we continue to use old, inefficient, and outdated technologies to produce the majority of our electricity?
Just one of the many advantages of upgrading our energy production is that it would create a large amount of jobs all across the country. This would in turn reduce the un-employment rate and increase money flow also helping to boost our economy out of its longstanding slump. The money needed for this could come from small tax increases, which would not be of large concern to many people since the money would be going towards conserving our beautiful country and improving health and safety throughout it.
Another main advantage of doing this would be that it would greatly lessen our carbon footprint. This would help with the problem of smog and acid rain in many cities across Canada. It would also improve overall air quality and better health in heavily polluted cities.
Doing this would have a very large positive impact on our country, and reduce out emissions by millions of metric tons. Even though this would not be a project to be completed in a year, it would be a great investment toward the future and wellbeing of our great country!
Sincerely, Ross Langmaid

ReplyDelete1. What do you see?
I see Oparh, Lance Armstrong in a fairly deep hole, and Oparh saying “I’m Here with Lance What Armstrong to Get to the Bottom of Things…” and the word ratings and reputation at the bottom of the hole.
2. What current issue is being addressed in this cartoon?
Is Oparh’s ratings are as low as Lance’s reputation?
3. What is the cartoonist trying to say about the issue through this cartoon?
The cartoonist is trying to say that Oparh show is get worst and worst just like Lance’s reputation
4. What do you think about the cartoonist's message? Why?
The cartoonist is trying to say that both of them are in a deep hole for their ratings and reputation.
5. What is your opinion about the issue being addressed? Why?
I think that the cartoonist message is true because no one watch Oparh show any more and same with Lance, no one really like him anymore because of what he did.

ReplyDelete1. In this cartoon I see: shovels, dirt, chairs, two words underneath Lance and Oprah, underneath Oprah it says ratings and underneath Lance it says reputation, They have two holes which symbolizes that they are getting to the bottom of things, a big hole that was dug and dog bones, Orpah holding a piece of paper and she is saying “I’m here with lance Armstrong to get to the bottom of things…”
2. The current issue being addressed in this cartoon is that the two networks on the show the Lance Armstrong show and Oprah Winfrey are in trouble and that people should hold grudges for something that they screwed up at or cheating on someone?
3. What the cartoonist is trying to say about this issue through this carton is that Lance doesn’t need Oprah. Oprah needs Lance for her network for her ratings and Armstrong confessed that Winfrey did not come clean that she elaborated. It also shows that people at the bottom of the hole trying to gain what they lost in life.
4. The cartoonist’s message is a simple cartoon and obvious. The cartoonist made it clear by using labeling, which describes that the two people have lost their ratings and reputation.
5. My opinion in this carton is that Winfrey and Armstrong both explain the truth and try to regain everything they use to have like their ratings and reputations.

Dear: The Right honorable Stephen Harper,
Hello I am George Ferguson, I’m a concerned student about the skyrocketing prices of Canadian Gas. In my social class we have been studying the increasing gas prices in Canada, we believe since we produce a great some of Gas we should get it cheaper than countries like Venezuela they pay $3.51 to fill up a gas tank that holds 39 gallons.
We might not have it as bad as other countries like Norway that has to pay $394.68 to fill up the same gas tank. Us Canadian’s who produce a lot of oil should get it much cheaper than what we are paying. Our gas prices need to go down or we need to get payed more the cost of living is going up but my paycheck isn't.
The economy is improving, this makes investors believe that more people will be demanding gas that’s why they bump up the prices. We can’t change our gas prices right now but we can make them better in the future if we act now.
To make the gas lower you should hire more rotary drilling rigs and more efficient workers who know how to operate the rigs. we should not sell our gas anymore to different countries and maybe keep some for ourselves also we are to busy selling the gas that we are starting to be in need of it.
Thank You for reading my letter and i hope that you take some of my thoughts into consideration you can contact me at 780-453-3544 or you can send me an email at georgeferguson2009@hotmail.com. thank you for your time.
sincerely,
George ferguson

Dear the Right Honorable Stephen Harper,
My name is Valentina Henao-Cruz. I currently reside in Edmonton, Alberta and am a grade 9 student at Vimy Ridge Academy and I am writing to you today to express my opinion about the new law made amendments to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Balanced Refugee Reform Act, which states “Any group of refugee claimants older than 16 who are designated as an “irregular arrival” by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews must undergo a year of mandatory detention”
Toews could designate a group as an “irregular arrival” if he suspects human smuggling played a role in their arrival or if they can’t be identified “in a timely matter.”
Refugee’s hope to arrive in Canada for a better life, to get away from war, racism and to get away from the troubles they had back home. These are people who have suffered severe trauma, high levels of post-traumatic stress disorder, high levels of depression and putting them in prison is bluntly obvious that this will furthermore damage their mental health.
“Studies in Australia, where similar rules have been in place since 1992, showing high levels of self-harm among detainees and a suicide rate 10 times higher than in the country’s general population” Which is a strong sign that this bill should not continue to be allowed in Canada.
One of the most freighting concern about this bill is its result on children. The bill states “Children aged 16 to 18 would be incarcerated as if they were adults, and children under 16 will either be taken away from their parents and put in foster care or kept with their mothers and separated from their fathers.” This can most definitely deteriorate a child’s mental growth. This is another strong sign that Bill C-31 should not be allowed.
Thank-you for taking time out of your day to read my letter to you, This is greatly appreciated. All I hope is that this has opened yours eyes to the reality of the issues of this new law.
Sincerely,
Valentina Henao-Cruz

ReplyDelete1.) I see Oprah Winfrey and lance Armstrong sitting in a hole that they dug. Oprah is saying “I’m here with lance Armstrong to get to the bottom of things” Lance does not look amused. At the very bottom of the holes there sitting in it says “reputation” under lance and “ratings” under Oprah.
ReplyDelete2.) The issue being addressed is, should we hold peoples mistakes against them? And continue to put them down even if they openly admit to them?
3.) He’s saying that by lance coming out about his doping he’s ruined his reputation as an athlete and a person, and by Oprah having him on her show her ratings will drop and she will lose some of her creditability as well. He is also showing that whatever bad comes out of this is their fault because, as he clearly depicts, they’ve metaphorically dug themselves into a hole.
4.) I agree on certain points, such as he will lose his reputation as a great athlete! However I don’t believe he should lose his reputation as a great person, because he has used his fame to promote great causes like charities (such as his own) and other associations that help people who are not as well-off or healthy.
5.) My personal opinion is as I stated above, I do believe he should no longer be considered an influential athlete, but I do not think that this should slash his reputation as a good person! We thought he was a good person all these years, why should that change because he made a mistake? He still is a good influential person, just now not as influential of an athlete.

Dear Stephan Harper,
My name is Luca De Nardis. I currently reside in Edmonton, Alberta and am a grade 9 student at Vimy Ridge Academy and I am writing to you today to express my opinion about the The majority of youth are unemployed as they transition from school to the labour market. Nearly half of jobless youth find work within 1 to 4 weeks.
Nearly half (46.8 per cent) of unemployed youth were able to find a job within 1 to 4 weeks in 2011 while the average duration of unemployment experienced by youth did not exceed 11 weeks in that year. In fact, the average duration of youth unemployment in 2011 was well below the shortest average duration ever experienced by young and mature workers over the past 30 years: 12.5 weeks in 2006 and 16.2 weeks in 2008 respectively.
In 2011, only a small proportion of unemployed youth (5.4 per cent) experienced long-term unemployment, i.e. were unemployed for more than one year. Young workers were twice more likely and mature workers were three times more likely to be unemployed long-term.
More than half (57.4 per cent) of all unemployed youth in 2011 had come out of school; only a small proportion (14.8 per cent) became jobless due to involuntary layoffs.
And in conclusion to this I think we should have more libraries than tim hortans or McDonalds. We could even make school less expensive so more can afford it
Thank you for your time sincerely Luca De Nardis.
I see Oprah Winfrey and lance Armstrong sitting in a hole that they dug. Oprah is saying “I’m here with lance Armstrong to get to the bottom of things” Lance does not look amused. At the very bottom of the holes there sitting in it says “reputation” under lance and “ratings” under Oprah.

He is also showing that whatever bad comes out of this is their fault because, as he clearly depicts, they’ve metaphorically dug themselves into a hole
4.)I think it was good because it is a simple cartoon and obvious. Since both people lost their ratings and reputations, he didn't have to explain a lot for one person then the other.
5.) I think that Armstrong and Winfrey both had to come out and explain the truth and try to regain their reputations and ratings back to the way it was when their were pretty popular. :)

Dear Stephen Harper:
My name is Jayant Zutshi and I am a student attending Vimy Ridge Academy. I am writing to you to address the issue of double-bunking prison beds. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and I hope you agree with my viewpoint. Prison is a solitary place and so is a cell. A person should be secluded in his/her cell and have the right of privacy. There are many negatives, not just privacy, of double bunking beds.
Double-bunking beds, in my opinion, add a substantial amount of new problems that would not arise with single bunk cells. One issue is privacy. Being in a confined room with a person, no matter who that person is, can drive a person wild. Everyone needs space and I think even though a person is in jail they deserve privacy. Being in a confined space meant for one not two, can also cause the issue of inmates fighting each other. It doesn’t take long to aggravate someone, and when that happens. Inmates may resolve to violence. This would not be a problem if single bunk beds were the norm, not double bunk beds.
Another issue is the safety of staff. When inmates resolve to violence, it can often affect staff as well. For example, a staff member in between two inmates in the middle of a conflict can be seriously injured. In my opinion, if there has to be jails that double bunk, I think the percentage of those jails should be under 15%. I also think that before two inmates are confined together, personality, past history, and any acts of violence or past crimes should be considered. This would greatly reduce the risk of staff or inmates getting injured.
If we would have just stuck to single bunking bed instead of double bunking them, these problems would not arise. Less prison staff would get injured and less amounts of inmates as well. Thank you again for taking the time to read my letter. If you have any questions or comments, or would like to reply to me in any form about this topic, please contact me at my email account: JayantZutshi123@gmail.com, or contact my phone number: 780-763-0980.

Political Cartoon Response: Thursday, February 7th 2013
ReplyDeleteIn this cartoon I saw Oprah Winfrey interviewing Lance Armstrong. This was the famous interview that aired in two parts on her network channel OWN. In the caption, a pun is used with the word `bottom`. Both Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong are in deep holes.
The issue that is being addressed in this cartoon is the irony of people saying that Lance Armstrong desperately needs Oprah Winfrey to get back into cycling. Most people thought Lance needed Oprah because of the publicity he would get and if admitting to what he did in public would allow him to enter cycling competitions again.
In my opinion, the cartoonist is blatantly stating his personal opinion, not a fact. He does include some factual information in his caption but the caption is based on opinion. His opinion is Oprah Winfrey needed Lance Armstrong as much as he needed her. The cartoonist states in the information for the caption that the OWN was dropping in ratings and was not successful compared to other TV channels, and interviewing Lance Armstrong on the famous topic of his admitting to doping and using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) would boost the OWNs ratings.
I think the cartoonist’s message is to think about things both ways. Oprah needs Lance as does he with her. This also applies with life. A direct message from it would be people need each other and no one can rely solely on themselves. This might not be the message the cartoonist is trying to send to readers and this captions message might just be specific to Lance Armstrong and Oprah Winfrey but I cannot interpret this cartoon very well.
If the issue being addressed applies specifically to Lance Armstrong and Oprah Winfrey, I think the cartoon has its place, but a very small one, and the message really isn`t that important, it is just a different viewpoint or a new way to think about the topic. If the message is more general, I think the cartoonist has a very valid point and people do rely on each other, both ways.

Dear the Right Hon. Stephen Harper:
I am a concerned Citizen of Canada. The Reason behind this is the crime rate in Canada I realize that Canada is growing more and more which means more crime rate but not like this. I strongly recommend that you start to make new rules for the people that do break the laws of Canada. Because then that hopefully slow down the crime rate.
The crime rate looks to be decreasing but there are more violent crimes than ever. One of the ideas I had was tougher sentencing more time in jail it will make them think twice about doing something. It will change the way Canada’s laws work. You will be a hero of this country you be loved for not being the president but saving this country.
Sincerely brayden

Dear the Right Honorable Stephen Harper:
My name is Ryan Hauge, a grade 9 student attending Vimy Ridge Academy, and I am writing to you about the endangerment of the artic polar bears. It has come to my attention that the polar bears are coming to a dangerous low which could evidentially affect the hunters and traders up in the north. Without the polar bears these hunters will be out of jobs and the cross border trade will be lost which could result in Canada’s economy dropping. When you and the other countries around the world meet in Bangkok I hope that you will consider my ideas.
Instead of breaking the cross border trade of the polar bears, we should limit the amount of polar bears allowed to be hunted/traded. This will give the polar bears around the world enough time to repopulate and regain their numbers. While this is occurring the hunters will most likely not have jobs which will affect the economy worldwide(mainly the artic). Because of the hunters situation the governments across the world should help them out by funding them a livable amount of money until they can regain their jobs. But if the number of polar bears does not increase then the hunters will have to find new animals to hunt.
If you do not do this then it will go either one of two ways. Number one, you end the cross border trade which will cause Canada to lose out on money. Number two, you don’t do anything about this issue which will cause the polar bears to become extinct. But if you modify these two ways it can be a win win situation. For example the polar bears won’t become extinct and Canada won’t lose out on money. The hunters may lose their jobs but they will be supported or will be applied jobs.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me at ryanhauge07@gmail.com or 7804449876. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Ryan Hauge

Dear the Right Honorable Stephen Harper:
Subject: Federal Government Concerns
My name is Cassidy Chalifoux and as a citizen of Edmonton, Alberta, it is my responsibility to express my opinions on behalf of the concerns I encounter living in such a city. My main concern is the excessive use of robocalls and that is why I’m writing this letter to you. There should be stricter rules around the use of robocalls. I for one am fed up with talking to fake people when I have real issues.
My reasons being for dissatisfaction are the following; they never fully understand any concept, which makes it hard for people who need their questions answered quickly and their problems resolved. I’m concerned with the government because majority of people are dissatisfied which could result in major protesting clans. Whenever there are huge protesting wars, it tends to get violent which isn’t easily controllable. Our Canadian government needs to take stand and listen to citizens like myself.
To enforce stricter rules on so-called telemarketing ‘robocalls’, I strongly advise that telemarketers will have to get written consent before placing automated calls to consumers. Mandating that these autodialed or prerecorded calls can only be placed to consumers who have already agreed in writing to receive them. However, there should be some exceptions such as; robocalls made by charities and political campaigns and providing information like school closings, flight changes and prescription refill reminders will not be affected by the new rules.
If all of these standards are met in the defeat of telemarketing ‘robocalls,’ our country will be more then pleased. Nobody enjoys annoying advertisements or anything involving similarities to that so, I hope you take my letter into consideration.
Sincerely,
Cassidy Chalifoux
