Hello Grade 9s!
Once you have finished the portfolio comparison assignment, go to school zone to the 'resources' page. On that page, you will find a post from me that includes links to 2 different webquests. You need to do both of these assignments (with the exception of question #4 in the first webquest - the one that asks you to make a poster).
You will need to open a word document for each webquest, and add your answers to each question to that word document.
Save each assignment in your social studies folder in your school documents. I will look at your assignment by going to your documents.
These webquests are due on Friday, February 15th.
This blog is for assignments and current events related to Ms. Terra Mahood's Social 9 classes at Vimy Ridge Academy.

Portfolio Comparison
Portfolio Comparison – 2007 → Today
Using the information from page 25
of your textbook and the information from the following website - www.parl.gc.ca - complete
both charts in full. When complete, e-mail me your charts in the body of your message. Don't forget to save your work as word documents! When you copy this into the word document, make sure the background of the table is not coloured (go to table design, and then shading, and then no colour). Then you'll have to change your font colour to black to be able to read the font.
Copy and paste the chart into a word
document. Fill it in appropriately and
then save it as ‘Portfolio Comparison #1’ in your social studies folder.
To fill in this chart, you need to look at the number of cabinet ministers for each category for each year. You are looking at 'portfolios' - so, this means you need to find the page on the government website where you can look at the parliament of your choice and then choose the correct boxes that let you select the categories below. So, how many Cabinet Ministers were men in 2007? How about today?

The History of Canada's Food Guide
The
History of Canada's Food Guide
Go to the following link and read
the article. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2012/07/27/f-food-guide-70.html
Comment on this current event.
First, summarize the article and
state the facts - Who wrote it? When was it written? Who does
it affect? What is it all about (summary)?
Second - What is the issue being
addressed here? Why is this a relevant issue? What could be debated
about in regards to this issue? How does this make you feel, when you
think about how the Canada Food Guide has been presented to you as a young
person?
Third - Discover the meaning of
'lobbyists'. You may do an internet search or use your textbook.
What do they do? What is their purpose? Why do they exist?
What do you think about their jobs and goals? Should there be some
government organizations or documents that should not be influenced by lobbyists,
or should people have a voice in all aspects of government? How do lobbyists relate to this article and
topic?
I've attached a link to the current
Canadian Food Guide here in case you need it: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/alt_formats/hpfb-dgpsa/pdf/food-guide-aliment/view_eatwell_vue_bienmang-eng.pdf
You should answer these questions as
a 'comment' to this entry. You should have 3 or 4 paragraphs and a
minimum of 12 sentences included. Answer all of the questions thoroughly
and be sure to be clear about your thoughts and opinions. You should
spend about 20 minutes on this assignment to do it well.
It will be marked as a formative
assessment.
Again - REMEMBER -
save your comment in a word document - just in case!
