Current Events Assignment #1

Hello Grade 9's!

Go to either
http://www.cbc.ca/news/ or http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/.  Choose a topic that interests you and is an issue for Canadians (it must be relevant and debatable).  Comment to this blog post with a summary of your article, a link to your article, and a debatable statement (full sentence or question) that outlines the issue addressed in your article.

Webquests . . .

Hello Grade 9s!

Once you have finished the portfolio comparison assignment, go to school zone to the 'resources' page.  On that page, you will find a post from me that includes links to 2 different webquests. You need to do both of these assignments (with the exception of question #4 in the first webquest - the one that asks you to make a poster).

You will need to open a word document for each webquest, and add your answers to each question to that word document.

Save each assignment in your social studies folder in your school documents. I will look at your assignment by going to your documents.

These webquests are due on Friday, February 15th.

Portfolio Comparison

Portfolio Comparison – 2007 → Today

Using the information from page 25 of your textbook and the information from the following website - www.parl.gc.ca - complete both charts in full. When complete, e-mail me your charts in the body of your message.  Don't forget to save your work as word documents!  When you copy this into the word document, make sure the background of the table is not coloured (go to table design, and then shading, and then no colour).  Then you'll have to change your font colour to black to be able to read the font.

Copy and paste the chart into a word document.  Fill it in appropriately and then save it as ‘Portfolio Comparison #1’ in your social studies folder.

To fill in this chart, you need to look at the number of cabinet ministers for each category for each year.  You are looking at 'portfolios' - so, this means you need to find the page on the government website where you can look at the parliament of your  choice and then choose the correct boxes that let you select the categories below.  So, how many Cabinet Ministers were men in 2007?  How about today?

Portfolio Specifics – 2007 → Today

Place a check mark (find this in 'symbols' in Word') in the columns in which the portfolios below were assigned.  Add any new portfolios to the bottom of the chart.

Copy the chart into a word document and then save it as ‘Portfolio Comparison #2’ in your Social Studies folder.
